This is a weekdaily sketch journal of Daniel Armstrong of Stringthink Narrative Design. My entries will mostly consist of 30-50 minute warmup sketches I do at the beginning of each work day. But I will also post more finished work from time to time as they are completed.
I work mostly digitally on my Wacom Cintiq 21UX and my Macbook running Corel Painter.

Hi Daniel,
I find your work very interesting. Is Corel Painter a worthwhile program? I have an IMac and use Photoshop.

Richard,
“Is Corel Painter a worthwhile program?” Absolutley!
That is, assuming you are working with a Wacom tablet. I have been working with it for the past 3-4 years and I can confidently say there is nothing else out there like it. It has superior pressure sensitivity, movement response and brush control to photoshop- so if you are looking for a program to draw in- this is the ONLY one (a distant second would be Alias Sketchbook Pro, but it is just not as deep) The only catch is, you will never get away from having to use photoshop. Painter doesn’t have the functionality that Photoshop has for manipulating images- Photoshop is the king there. I am constantly switching between the two for something or other. Painter will save files directly as a .PSD so all the layers stay put.
Many people like to render with Photoshop, which is fine by me, but something is a bit lacking when sketching in it. In the end Painter is a very specific tool for creating digital paintings so it is fantastic at that and not much else . Photoshop, on the other hand, is more of a jack-of-all-trades which does just about everything you need it do for image manipulation and layout (it also talks well to all the other programs in the CS- a huge plus!) but it falls short in the digital drawing world. Hope that helps!

Daniel,
I have a church friend that wants to do 5 t-shirts, each featuring 1 animal illustration. He has given me 4 of the 5 drawings which I have scanned in. I was wondering if you had time to do a favor for me. Would you be able to illustrate these animals in just 2 colors? Or, a third color could be introduced if it uses the color of the t-shirt. I think he doesn’t want it to be too cartoony, and not overly realistic either. Somewhere in between. The shirts would initially be for an adult to wear.
I definitely know my strengths and illustrating is not it. I want his shirts to look nice and not sure if the guy that did the line drawings could do the quality that I think is needed. I’d love it if I could show him the quality he could have if they were done by you. Well, email me if you think it’s something you could do quickly and had time for. Maybe you could just illustrate one and we’ll see what my friend thinks.
Thanks Daniel! You (and Arian) are the best illustrators I know and so I had to ask. Have a good one.
